Digitalis purpurea, digoxin (digitalis, digitalin)
  • Foxglove (Digitalis)
    • It is a genus of plants with about 35 species
    • The plants contain glycosides, which are used to make the drug digoxin

    • Positive inotropic - increases myocardial contractility

Therapeutic Window of Digoxin

  • Digoxin has a narrow therapeutic window
    • The therapeutic serum level is 0.5 - 1.5 ng/ml
    • A level of < 0.5 ng/ml is ineffective
    • A level of > 2 ng/ml is toxic and poses a risk of arrhythmias
